Learn-to-Swim

(5 Months – 12 Years)

Introduction to Water Skills

Participants will participate in activities which allow them to feel comfortable in the water and enjoy water safely.  Students will learn elementary aquatic skills such as breath control, underwater swimming, buoyancy, swimming on front/back and personal water safety.

(Prerequisite = Participation in Swim Test).


Level 1 Skills Learned

(must be completed independently)

  • Monkey on wall – 5 yards.
  • Clap hands/bicycle kick (treading water) – 15 seconds.
  • Five continuous fully submerged bobs with bubbles.
  • Retrieve an object underwater held at arms length.
  • Starfish float with face in the water blowing bubbles for 5 seconds.
  • Superman glide using fast baby kicks on front with face in the water – 5 yards.
  • Scoops with face in water blowing bubbles (freestyle) – 5 yards.
  • Starfish float on back then add fast baby kicks – 5 yards.
  • Fast baby kicks on back hugging kickboard – 5 yards.
  • PB & J arms on back (backstroke) – 5 yards.
  • Dolphin kick on front using a kickboard – 5 yards.
  • Double scoops on front using a noodle (butterfly) – 5 yards.
  • Bird arms & legs on back – 10 yards.
  • Jump into water unassisted and recover to the wall.
  • Use lifejackets in lazy river.

Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Participants explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg action on the front and back.  This lays the foundation for future strokes such as freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.

(Prerequisite = A Learn-To-Swim Level 1 certificate or demonstrated competency of Level 1 skills through a Swim Test)


Level 2 Skills Learned

(must be completed independently)

  • Complete 10 bobs fully submerged in 5 feet area.
  • Front glide w/kick – 5 yards. Turn to a back float – 5 seconds and recover to wall.
  • Back glidew/kick – 5 yards. Turn to a front float – 5 seconds and recover to wall.
  • Freestyle with face in water using fast baby kicks and breathing to side – 10 yards.
  • Backstroke w/PB & J arms and fast baby kicks – 10 yards.
  • Dolphin kick with face in water – 10 yards.
  • Double scoops with face in the water – 10 yards.
  • Bird arms and legs on back – 10 yards.
  • Retrieve an object at least 4 feet deep.
  • Tread water – 30 seconds.
  • Jump into water unassisted, tread water 15 seconds and recover to the wall.

Stroke Development

Participants will learn to coordinate the front and back crawls.  They will also learn elements for the butterfly and the fundamentals of treading water.

(Prerequisite = A Learn-To-Swim Level 2 certificate or demonstrated competency in Level 2 skills through a Swim Test)


Level 3 Skills Learned

(must be completed independently)

  • Complete 15 bobs fully submerged in 5 feet area.
  • Streamline – two body lengths in front.
  • Front glide w/kick – 10 yards. Turn to a back float – 5 seconds.
  • Freestyle (scoops) w/rotary breathing – 1 pool length.
  • Streamline – 2 body lengths on back.
  • Back glide w/kick – 10 yards. Turn to a back float – 5 seconds.
  • Backstroke – 1 pool length.
  • Dolphin kick with face in the water – 1 pool length.
  • Butterfly arms – 1 pool length.
  • Chicken, T, Rocket w/glide (elementary backstroke) – 1 pool length.
  • Tread water 1 minute.
  • Jump into water, tread 30 seconds, freestyle to opposite pool wall.

Stroke Development

Participants will improve skills and increase endurance by swimming greater distances.  Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke and elements of sidestroke are introduced.

(Prerequisite = A Learn-To-Swim Level 3 certificate or demonstrated competency in Level 3 skills through a Swim Test)


Level 4 Skills Learned

(must be completed independently)

  • Complete 20 bobs fully submerged in 5 feet area.
  • Streamline – 3 body lengths in front
  • Freestyle w/rotary breathing – 2 pool lengths
  • Streamline – 3 body lengths on back
  • Backstroke – 2 pool lengths
  • Elementary Backstroke – 2 pool lengths
  • Butterfly – 1 pool length
  • Breaststroke – 1 pool length
  • Sidestroke – 1 pool length
  • Tread water – 1 minute with no hands
  • Tread water – 3 minutes using 2 different kicks

Learn-to-Swim Policies

 

There will be no make up classes or refunds for classes that participants are unable to attend.
